Blue Sapphire

Blue Sapphire

2010  50cm x 76cm  acrylic

My friend, Marquerete asked me to do a painting for her beautiful original music “Blue Sapphire” and then she told me the story of the music.   As I thought about it I could see a pavement of blue sapphire in the foreground of the painting.  I sensed that there had to be rainbow colours in the background.

I tried to find scripture references about God’s throne room.  I was having trouble finding them and when I told Marquerete that, she said she already had found them.  I looked up the verses she gave me and to my delight I read in Exodus 24:11 “Under his feet was something like a pavement made of sapphire, clear as the sky itself”. Then I read Ezekiel 1:25-28, “Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him”.

I later found Ezekiel 8:2, Ezekiel 10:1 and Rev 1:13-15 that further described what I knew I was to try and paint.

I had just commenced painting “Blue Sapphire” when I visited a friend.  She shared with me that she had recently had a dream, a vision, and she then described it to me.  It was very much the same as the picture I had in my mind for “Blue Sapphire”.  But her vision had some very important details that helped me so much as I moved further into doing the detail work.  This sharing time was such an encouragement to both of us.

At first I thought I would depict the two figures, God and the “Seeker” as silhouettes.  The main reason was; I didn’t like painting people!  Whenever I’d painted people before, I’d always got away with painting their back view!  But as I started painting the silhouettes they looked ghostlike with no warmth to them.  So I knew I had to go into uncharted territory for me and paint the face of God. The first face I’d painted and it had to be the face of God!  Once again I sought the Lord to guide me, this time how to depict His face and the words of Jesus came to me –  “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father”. John 14:9

Painting this picture has impacted me greatly and I now experience the privilege of seeing this scene in my mind, as I worship and pray and I am welcomed into His throne room.
